Mexico's first "Catch & Release" Lake with all commercial fishing (nets)
strictly prohibited, along with slot limits and enforced bag-possession
limits.
Lake El Cuchillo ( The Knife) is one of the newer lakes in the State of
Nuevo Leon. It is located just a few kilometers west-southwest of China.
Construction on the Rio San Juan dam site was started in October 1989
with inauguration in 1994. The dam is located some 48 miles due south of
the Rio Grande US-Mexican border. El Cuchillo was heavily stocked with
Florida genetics and is already yielding Trophy Bass over 10 pounds,
with the new lake record standing at 14 pounds 6 ounces. The lake was
very slow in filling to pool elevation due to a prolonged drought in
that area of Mexico, but the lake has been near pool elevation for the
past several years. Water from El Cuchillo is pumped some 60 miles to
the city of Monterrey for industrial and residential use. With its close
proximity to the US border, (approximately 2 hours drive southwest of
McAllen, Texas via Mexican turnpike). El Cuchillo should continue as a
very popular new lake for Gringo Bass Chasers. There are several
Motels-Restaurants near the lake and town of China that cater to bass
anglers and the new full service Hotel Hacienda Don Carlos, located in
the State Park on the waters edge offers excellent service at reasonable
prices . Members of the various Monterrey and area Bass Clubs, along
with officials from the State of Nuevo Leon are promoting El Cuchillo
and working very hard to make certain it becomes one of the premiere
trophy bass lakes in Northeastern Mexico!
